Of course, you're welcome to sign up for more than one slot, or additional slots if you'd already signed up previously! The more volunteers we have, the more funds we can raise to help people with disabilities travel to the SPD Ability Centre regularly, where they will receive work, training, and company. Today we celebrated Chinese New Year at DAC! Although the rain outside was heavy, we did not let that dampen our spirits. We started today's Beneficiary Visit with a very festive sing-a-long session of Chinese New Year songs. Some clapped along, some sang heartily, and some even danced!
Next we gave out Bingo sheets in red packets. Many lucky winners today! And for the clients that stayed a little longer, we made Chinese New Year decorations together using red packets. And everyone received a special Chinese New Year goodie bag before they left for home for the upcoming Chinese New Year break!
We hope today's visit brought some Chinese New Year festive cheer to our volunteers and the clients at DAC. We would also like to thank the volunteers today for making your way down to SPD today, especially in spite of the heavy rain! You guys are amazing!
Please do join us again for our finale visit on 20th Feb - let's end our last visit with a bang! We will also be recruiting volunteers for our internal drive in NUS, where we will raise funds and awareness in aid of SPD's Transport Subsidy Fund. More details to come soon!
We would also like to announce that we will be holding external drives in two shopping malls this year: Heartland Mall (near Kovan MRT station) and Hougang Mall (near Hougang MRT station). Thanks to both Heartland Mall and Hougang Mall for sponsoring their mall space for us to conduct our external drives!
Besides our venue sponsors, we would like to thank our 7 sponsors for sponsoring cash/items for Signature Love Project IX. They are PUB, Tote Board, Simple Sprees, Boxystuff, Sundra, 77th Street and AXA. Do take a look at our sponsors page and visit their websites!
SLP IX wishes everyone a happy Chinese New Year!

About Signature Love Project
Signature Love Project is NUSCSC’s annual fund-raising project, targeted at helping different beneficiaries every year through raising funds and awareness. This is the 9th year that this project is running and our adopted beneficiary is the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD). What makes NUSCSC’s Signature Love Project different from other fund-raising projects are the (i) Signatures and our (ii) Love.
- For a minimum donation of $2, donors are entitled to leave their little ‘declarations of love’ in the form of Signature Items, which will be presented to the beneficiaries as a token of our Love and concern.
- In addition, we seek to promote interaction between our volunteers and beneficiaries. By engaging them in meaningful and interactive activities, we endeavour to bring a difference to the lives of the beneficiaries, as well as to promote a community spirit within our volunteers.
The theme for this year is ‘Disabled, Enabled’, which summarises SLP IX’s objective of helping people with disabilities to gain their rightful place in the society through the support of the public. The Signature Items are mini wheelchair flags, on which donors can pen down their ‘declarations of love’. Donors can then proceed to placing the Signature Items into a miniature city model which represents Singapore. Through this small gesture, donors pledge their support for integrating the disabled community into our society. Once the drives have concluded, these Signature Items will be presented to SPD as a memorabilia.
This year, the targeted amount to be raised for SPD is $10 000. The funds raised will go towards SPD’s Transport Subsidy Fund, which will help relieve the financial burden on the beneficiaries by subsidising their daily transportation to Day Activity Centre (DAC) in SPD, where they can pick up new skills and participate in enriching activities.
We hope that through our little efforts, we would be able to raise public awareness of these beneficiaries who may have been neglected by society, and hence, enable them a place within society.
The Society for the Physically Disabled
The Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) promotes the interest, welfare and advancement of people with disabilities, in particular working in partnership with people with physical disabilities to develop their potential to the fullest so that they can be self-reliant and independent.
The following are some examples of SPD's services.
- Clients under the SPD vocational training programme undergo on-the-job training with the goal of attaining the various competencies needed to find gainful employment;
- Support for children and youth with physical disabilities, or whose parent(s) have physical disabilities, are provided under different services to maximise their potential by looking into their physical, intellectual and social development in the hope that these children and youth will become self-reliant when they grow up, and contribute back to society;
- SPD offers quality community-based rehabilitation services for all age groups;
- Assessment and training in the use of Assistive Technology to help people with physical disabilities overcome the limitation of their disabilities so as to enable them to perform activities of daily living;
- IT Training: the Infocomm Accessibility Centre enables people with disabilities to acquire infocomm technology skills and, ultimately, enhance their employment opportunities.
In addition, SPD’s Day Activity Centre (DAC) provides day care for people with physical and multiple disabilities, with the aims of maximising their potential to be independent in their activities of daily living, as well as providing their caregivers and family members with respite and giving them the opportunity to continue working without having to worry about caring for them.
SPD also offers specially-adapted transportation services for their clients who may face difficulties using public transport when travelling to and fro the centre and their homes.
